You can have a fort going forever without even messing with a cavern, it's pretty optional. On cavern level one mainly you'll find minor annoyance except for FB's, which are insanely awful because their fluids are poison and they sometimes have bad direct attacks. In the cavern you'll find wood, plants, spider silk, and other assorted crap like things to kill. This is also a good idea on the top level. Once you've walled in, I think it makes sense to build a shallow moat (3/7) that dwarves have to walk across in order to get in the main fort, so they won't track deadly shit into your main fortress. You definitely want to wall in before a forgotten beast appears. Next thing you know they'll have named weapons. If there's a good spot with clear lines of fire - you can even build out a little carved fortification fortress - and use it as a base from which to train your marksdwarves. By doing this repeatedly you can get a pretty good sense of how big it is, how close you came to running into it 3 z-levels up, and where you need to dig to get past it and down to where all dwarves ideally want to be - adjacent to magma. This lets you see out - and shoot out - and it will expose more of the cavern. you've got some sense of what's there already - dig down adjacent to some exposed area and carve a forification into the wall that separates the cavern and your tunnel. Unless you're really unlucky - the first breach into the catacombs isnt going to instantly destroy your fortress - you have time to wall it off properly (remember - designating a wall in 2 squares then suspending the construction on the far one will cause your dorf to build from the direction that doesnt have the suspended construction - this is pretty key to getting your little morons to not lock themselves in tiny rooms) but you probably will learn to relax when these things happen. You can see the area that was exposed by your 'oh crap' moment. These can block paths if you're not careful, and can be an incredibly awesome wood source if you are. Now that you have breached the cavern, trees will start growing on any muddy tiles underground. Of course, flowing water is nice to have to power machinery. That said, you don't need much water if you are keeping your booze production going (which you should anyway). The simplest way is with a well (check the wiki for proper well design), but to move larger quantities of water up to somewhere useful, you may want to build a pump stack. The water sounds like it will be very useful for you, but it may be very difficult for you to get at. Then later I can add a way into the cavern for civs. Since I like to have a central staircase, I also like to start out by building the staircase through the cavern, digging/building floors and walls as I go to make a sealed tunnel. They can also spook dwarves many z-levels up if the stairs are directly aligned, which leads to job cancellation spam. It's quite possible that some enemies in the cavern will be inaccessible to you because of the water often they will be content to ignore you, too.īeware that any flying creatures in the cavern may fly up your central stairwell, if you have one, and wreak havoc on your fortress. The military you describe should have no problem get them in there first. Sending civilians into the cavern is risky, but the first one you encounter shouldn't be too bad. If you have built a loom and haven't messed around with the default workshop orders, your dorfs will then automatically wander into the cavern to collect webs (left behind by cave spiders and giant cave spiders - warning: they can be dangerous) which can then be spun into thread and then woven into cloth (GCS cloth makes for quite valuable clothing).
